The Township of Gillies operates one landfill for resident use only. The landfill is located at 289 Neva Road and can be accessed through Neva Road entrances off Highway 595 or 588 or through Turk Road off Highway 595.

Hours of operation

The landfill is open on the following date and times:

  • Saturdays 10:00am to 5:00pm – all year
  • Wednesdays 6:00pm to 8:00pm – May 1 to September 15 

Bag tags

Bag tags are required at the landfill site. Owners of household properties are eligible to receive bag tags at the beginning of each year. Bag tags may be picked up at the Township Office during business hours or mailed out by request.  If you require additional bag tags the fee is $2.00 per tag or $10.00 per sheet.

Good neighbour shack

The Good Neighbour Shack is for resident use only and is located at the landfill site. The Good Neighbour Shack is a small building where residents can leave second hand items which are in decent shape for other residents to potentially use. 

All items placed in the Good Neighbour Shack must be held for a minimum of 72 hours prior to anyone taking items out of the shack.

Drop off and pick up times are alternating between Saturdays. Please contact us for more information on drop off and pick up times.

What items can I dispose of at the landfill?

Only waste originating from and created by residents of the Township of Gillies is permitted. Recycling of all recyclable materials is mandatory. All recyclable materials shall be placed in the designated areas or as directed by the Waste Site Attendant.    

 Permissible waste includes:
  • Garbage
  • Refuse
  • Rubbish
  • Incinerator waste
  • Processed organic waste

We also accept furniture, including mattresses and vehicle seats if they are broken up to the greatest extent possible.  Please place the broken-up pieces in the designated areas according to each piece’s composition.

 Items not accepted:
 We do not accept non-permissible waste at the landfill site. Non-permissible waste includes:
  • Hazardous waste
  • Hauled sewage or sewage
  • Animal or fowl carcasses
  • Automobiles
  • Industrial waste
  • Agricultural waste
  • Medical waste
  • Demolition waste
  • Used fuel tanks
  • Used paint or paint cans
  • Motor oil
  • Renovation wastes
  • Refrigeration and freezer units (unless the units are tagged by a certified refrigeration specialist indicating that the freon has been removed)

Landfill rules and regulations

You must place all permissible waste in the open trench except for recyclable materials, burnable materials, household batteries, automotive batteries, mercury containing items, electronics, electrical appliances, and scrap metal which shall be placed in designated areas.

Residents are only allowed one truckload or one trailer load of waste per day provided that each garbage bag has a bag tag.

You cannot dispose of waste at the landfill on behalf of a non-resident. We also do not accept waste that originated from or was created from the household or business of a non-resident.
